The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

The Emotional Freedom Technique is used by millions worldwide to clear emotional stress, trauma and upset that hinders our ability to live with wellness and calm. The technique has been clinically shown to reduce depression, anxiety, traumatic stress, phobias, cravings and negative emotions such as anger, sadness, grief, fear, hurt and guilt. By using the EFT, we work to create a sense of well-being and contentment.

You know that feeling you have when you find something that works so beautifully, that you simply can’t keep it to yourself. It feels wrong not to share it. Well as an Emotional Wellness Therapist that’s exactly how I feel about the Emotional Freedom Technique, also known as tapping.

You may well have heard of EFT before. You may have seen it being used by athletes in the Olympics or heard about it through of the wonderful books that have been written on Energy Psychology, or maybe you’ve seen it being used in schools.

So, what is so exciting about EFT?

It is super-fast, effective- which is great because we don’t like to wait.

It’s really kind and gentle- which is so important because we are so often really mean to ourselves. Anyone can use it - it’s a great self-help technique as well and being a technique that you can use with a practitioner.

EFT works so well because it clears stuck energy and when we have energy that gets stuck we experience unsettling emotions, like fear, sadness, anger, shame and guilt.

Now, I want to be super clear, there is nothing wrong with these emotions, or any others. The challenge comes when the emotions get pushed down and become stuck. Then they can impact on every area of our lives; our relationship with ourselves (the most important relationship that we have), our relationships with others, our weight and relationship with food, our finances, our jobs, our businesses, our beliefs, how we show up in the world and our overall wellbeing.

Like Acupuncture without the needles! EFT works on the principle that negative emotions are caused by a disturbance in our energy system. By tapping on acupuncture points and saying certain phrases out loud, we are able to effectively ‘rewire’ our energy system. The result is a feeling of both letting go, peace and calm as the negative emotions dissipate.

EFT and similar techniques are often discussed under the umbrella term "energy psychology".
During a typical EFT session, the person will focus on a specific issue while tapping on "end points of the body's energy meridians".

The session consists of the client isolating a specific emotion or feeling such as 'I don’t feel confident at work'...rating the emotional intensity of this feeling with Subjective Units of Distress Scale (SUDS out of 10), and tapping through specific points of the body while repeating statements. This process is repeated until the SUDS level has reduced and a positive alternative has been chosen and established.
In life we all have 'learned emotions' from everything we have experienced. Past events can affect us by leaving 'echos' playing in the background and while consciously we may not be aware of these they can still affect every emotion we have today. These negative emotions affect the flow of our energy and can create blocks. EFT allows us to work through these blocks, and shift them out of the body. EFT is an effective, elegant and kind way of releasing us from our past so that we are able to fully embrace our positive future.
Everyone is different, we all have our own core beliefs and although they can be traced back generally to a few main belief structures, our unique layers of emotion will guide the requirement. Together we will work through these at the correct pace for you.
